Most self-employed people have the responsibility of finding, purchasing, and paying for their own health insurance. Surviving high monthly costs and making sure you aren’t overpaying for your benefits is a challenge that is unique to those of us who are self-employed. Here are three ideas that will help you improve your financial, medical, and tax situation at the same time.
1. Catastrophic Insurance Instead of “Full Traditional Benefits”
As someone who is self-employed, I have paid hundreds per month in health insurance premiums, only to watch my healthy family go on about their lives without medical incidence, which I am very grateful for. What I’m not excited about is throwing thousands of dollars of my family’s money away each year whether we remain health or not.
Catastrophic health insurance plans are different than full-benefit plans that most Americans are used to. They typically don’t cover your office visits or prescriptions, or other everyday claims. You are responsible for those. In exchange for that responsibility, the insurance company will give you a hefty discount on your monthly rate. Of course, your medical deductible will likely be higher too.
2. Catastrophic Benefits are Quite Comprehensive
It takes a little getting used to, but if you think about it, for the price you pay, your insurance company is covering the really big stuff pretty well. Many catastrophic insurance plans cover your expenses at 100% after you have met your deductible. That’s more than most Americans can say about their low deductible, bells and whistles coverage. Some catastrophic plans pay for your preventive care each year before you are required to pay your deductible. So basically, if you remain healthy throughout the year and take care of yourself, you can come out financially ahead…way ahead.
3. Tax Advantages
Most of us, who are self-employed can use tax deductions. Many catastrophic plans are “qualified” high deductible health plans. Qualified just means they are eligible to be used with a health savings account. If that’s the case, you can open up a health savings account, deposit money pre-tax, and pay for your medical (and many other) expenses tax free. It’s a great incentive to take on a little more medical risk. On top of that, you are saving buckets of money (and I’m not exaggerating) each month.
For the self-employed there’s no better way to save money, keep quality benefits, and get tax advantages than getting a catastrophic health plan that’s compatible with a health savings account. Find out how much you can save and compare your current benefits to a high deductible health plan by completing this simple form.
